A former freestyle swimmer, Schumacher won two gold medals as a member of the United States Men's 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter Freestyle Relay Teams at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Four years later, he was a member of the US Men's Water Polo Team that placed in sixth place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
The only aquatics athlete in the world to become a world champion in both swimming and water polo, he competed in the 1998 World Championships in both sports to become the first athlete to compete simultaneously at the World Class level since Bob Hughes at the 1956 Olympic Games.
He joined an elite group of athletes to compete in both sports at a world championship level as only Duke Khanamoku, Johnny Weissmuller, Bob Hughes and Matt Biondi also competed in water polo and swimming on the world level.
Schumacher has not strayed far from his roots as he co-founded with fellow Olympian Wolf Wigo Kap7, Inc., a commercial pool equipment and supply company, and serves as head coach of SET Water Polo Club in South Orange County, California.
The clinic is part of the largest varsity water polo championship in the nation as the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship features the league's 11 Division I/II members and newly crowned Division III Eastern Champion battling over the three-day period of Friday-Sunday, April 26-28, for the league championship and an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

The victor of the CWPA Easttern Championship earns the league's championship and one of six automatic berths to the NCAA Championship as the CWPA, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Big West Conference and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) champions join two At-Large selections in Cambridge, Mass. on the campus of Harvard at the NCAA Championship two weeks later on May 10-12 at Harvard.
This marks Michigan's second time hosting the tournament since 2000 as the CWPA Eastern Championship was last in Ann Arbor, Mich. during the 2008 season. The 2013 championship will tie the Wolverines for second place on the all-time hosting list with Indiana (2011, 2005), Harvard (2009, 2003) as only Brown (2012, 2006, 2001) and Princeton (2007, 2002, 2000) have served as the champinoship site. Bucknell (2004), which will host the 2014 tournament, and Maryland (2010) have each been the site once.
